After winning the FA Cup in 1978, Ipswich went on to conquer Europe and brought home the UEFA Cup in 1981.
Robson caused delight among Geordie fans when he took over at Newcastle United.
In 2004, aged 71, he led the Geordies to the UEFA Cup semi-finals - the nearest the club had come to European glory in over 30 years.
His managerial prowess notwithstanding, Robson's charisma and sense of humour won admiration, respect and affection throughout the game.
He took over as International Football Consultant to Ireland in 2006, when Steve Staunton was manager.
He was knighted and made a CBE in recognition of the part he played in the life of a nation.
A drowning diver has told how she was saved by a whale that pushed her back to the surface when she suffered crippling cramps.
Terrified Yang Yun thought she was going to die when her legs were paralysed by arctic temperatures during a free-diving contest without any breathing equipment.
"I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me - I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface," she explained.
Competitors had to sink to the bottom of an aquarium's 20ft arctic pool and stay there for as long as possible amid the beluga whales at Polar Land in Harbin, north east China.
But when Yun, 26, tried to head to the surface she found her legs were crippled by cramps.
Beluga whale Mila had spotted her difficulties and using her sensitive dolphin-like nose guided Yun safely to the surface.
"Mila noticed the problem before we did," explained an organiser.
"We suddenly saw the girl being pushed to the top of the pool with her leg in Mila's mouth. She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her her life."

Arjun Singh and Pargat Singh are very close friends. The whole school talked about their friendship.

Arjun: Yes that is a deal and they parted with tears in their eyes... As time went by, both got busy with their work life. They kept their promise for two years and after that they moved on with their own lives and in the process Arjun lost his contact with Pargat. Time went by and both became Police Officers.

A Malaysian extremist wanted over a string of terror attacks is thought to be behind two suicide bombings at hotels in Indonesia which killed at least nine people.
Noordin Mohammed Top is a violent jihadist, a master bomb-maker, and the leader of the most extreme splinter group of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network.
Police have been studying an unexploded device and bomb-making materials found in the suspects' "control centre" in room 1808 of the JW Marriott hotel in the capital Jakarta.
The hotel was attacked along with its nearby sister hotel the Ritz-Carlton, where the Manchester United team were to stay during their Far East tour.
DNA evidence, including a severed head from the remains of two suicide bombers, was also being examined as security was tightened across Indonesia and the Philippines.
Four foreigners - a New Zealand businessman, two Australians and a Singaporean - were among those killed.
Scores of people were injured, including a man of UK-US dual nationality.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings, but the security ministry's anti-terror chief, Ansyaad Mbai, said there was evidence Noordin carried out the atrocity.
Sandra Bullock has said having to strip naked for her latest film was not a big deal and "just like a normal day".

The Proposal, which is released this week, sees Sandra play a power obsessed book publisher who, fighting to avoid deportation to her native Canada, ropes assistant Andrew into marrying her.
And for the sake of his career, he rather absurdly plays along.
She becomes caught up in various fish out of water scenarios as he takes her on a trip to Alaska to meet his family.
The movie is meant to make you laugh, and involves a boy and a girl getting together, but whatever you do, don't call it a romantic comedy.
Sandra has been put off the term after seeing years of what she feels are bad rom-coms.
The actress said: "They just didn't write good ones. I would watch them and just go 'oh my god', the egg on the faces of these people.
"I think we need to remove the word romantic from these kind of comedies. If there's a male and female in it, they know you're going to get together, and it's the journey of getting there that should be entertaining, not the end result".
This is Sandra's first movie of the kind since she teamed up with Hugh Grant in 2002 to make "Two Week's Notice".
