Fell In Love With Your Colleague? I'll Teach You How To Woo Him

It's not always a good idea, but falling for someone on the job happens quite frequently. If you decide to get serious, here are some tips on how to make it happen successfully.
If you're crushing on a colleague, you're not alone: A CareerBuilder.com survey found that 40 percent of workers have dated someone on the job during their career, proving that it's a hookup hot spot, albeit one with parameters. Here, advice for turning a flirtation into a potential relationship.
TESTING THE WATERS
Before making a move, it's a good idea to suss out whether your work crush has the hots for you too. Some tip-offs are "if he starts hanging around your work space a lot or asks you to grab lunch or after-work drinks," says Stephanie Losee, coauthor of Office Mate.
It's also promising if he's in an unrelated department yet asks your opinion on a project of his — it indicates that he is looking for an excuse to talk to you and values your opinion, notes Losee.
You can do your own digging by jokingly saying, "Everyone thinks we're seeing each other, ha-ha. Crazy, right?" If he casts a wide grin or seems into the idea, the coast is clear to start flirting and see what happens.
AVOID GETTING BUSTED
Once you've gotten together (we know you'll get this thing moving), keep that info on the DL. "If it turns out to be a two-week fling, nobody needs to know about it," says Helaine Olen, coauthor of Office Mate. And monitor how often you bring him up. Olen says coworkers often intuit a liaison when one person mentions the other too frequently — for example, "Here's that report...John helped with the graphics" or "Where'd you go for lunch? Oh, John loves that place."
But if you were chummy before, don't ignore him now — that draws more attention than the occasional friendly moments does. No matter how covert you are, people are likely to catch on, but there's no need to broadcast it.
WHEN TO COME CLEAN
Most companies are lenient about dating (except between supervisors and their subordinates), says Lois Frankel, PhD, author of Stop Sabotaging Your Career. "They recognize its ubiquity." But there may be rules about whom you have to inform and when.
If it gets serious (i.e., several months), it's wise to tell your boss — even if you don't have to — before she hears it from someone else, notes Frankel. Just say "I wanted to let you know Brad and I are dating. We'll be sure not to let it interrupt our work."

New Year Eve Sex Party Charge Only $72 Per Entry

Malaysian authorities have condemned rumoured plans for a New Year's Eve sex party at a remote beach, while police warned the "no-underwear" event could be a con job.
Newspaper reports said the party for the under-40s, to be held in southern Johor state bordering Singapore, was being advertised through a website that asked for 250 ringgit (72 dollars) as an entrance fee.
"A sex party is against our culture and religion and if it went on, it would damage the country's reputation worldwide," Tourism Minister Azalina Othman said according to the New Straits Times newspaper on Tuesday.
"There are other events organised to usher the New Year which are hip, fun and suitable to our culture."
Party organisers had reportedly said that male guests were banned from wearing briefs to the event, while women were only permitted to wear G-string underwear which had to be removed after midnight.
Johor criminal investigation department chief Amer Awal warned that the sex party was likely to be a fraud designed to cheat potential partygoers out of the ticket price.
"The idea of organising such a party is far-fetched but the state Religious Department and local councils have all been informed," he told the New Straits Times, adding that authorities would be on alert.

Miffty Zhang Break Silence And Apologized To Vivian Chow

Miffty Zhang, girl involved in scandal with Hong Kong writer Joe Nieh, sent out a press release through her lawyer in Hong Kong on Monday, expressing her deepest apologies to everyone affected.
The scandal was exposed on tabloids when they were caught in passionate kisses at a nightspot and created a drama for Nieh's relationship with girlfriend Vivian Chow. Both Chow and Nieh announced their break up on Dec 11; four days after the photos were published. On Dec 18, Nieh surprise the public by announcing that he has successfully proposed to Chow and is currently amidst their wedding preparations.
In Zhang's press release, she said:
"The incident at Lam Kwai Fong happened about a fortnight ago. I am just a 22-year-old student who is in Hong Kong to pursue my studies. I am not a public figure and I cannot handle the fictitious reports and criticisms on various media. I chose to return home, reflected on my behavior and sought my family's opinion on the matter.
It seems that the matter lost control. Media fabricated stories and various blogs passed off my identity, conjuring untrue reports and messages, affecting my family, friends and school. I am deeply regretful for my actions or behavior which has brought pressure and trouble. On accepting my family and friends' advices, I am now facing up with responsibilities and hereby, I would like to express my sincere apologies and clarify the misunderstandings the public have of me. This will be my one and only response regarding the matter."
However, a Hong Kong weekly magazine reported that Zhang has been bombarding Nieh with SMS and phone calls after knowing that he has chosen to marry Chow. She also threatened to end her life if he continues with the wedding. To avoid staging a tragedy, Nieh has persuaded Chow to postpone their wedding.

6 Biggest Mistakes Skin Care Techniques That Can Destroy Your Skin

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

Great skin doesn't require spending a fortune on some "miracle cream" made from rare seaweed from the Arctic Circle! It's all about simple good habits. But let's approach those habits from the opposite direction: What are the most damaging bad habits that I see time and time again?
1. Using a cleanser with harsh detergents: Many people assume that the suds of their vigorously foaming cleanser are a good sign -- surely they'll leave skin extra clean. Unfortunately, copious suds are generally a sign that your cleanser contains a harsh detergent, like lauryl sulfate, that strips skin of vital lipids. (And don't get me started on bar soap -- that is always a no-no.) Instead, look for cleansers that contain fatty acids and will actually fortify your skin, like Dove's ProAge products, or even simple cold cream. If you have particularly dry skin, I recommend cleansing oils, which remove dirt and makeup without disturbing your skin's natural protective barrier.

2. Not using a retinoid: Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is the only topical ingredient proven not only to prevent lines and wrinkles but to minimize the ones you already have. Past the age of 30, I recommend seeing a dermatologist for a higher-concentration prescription retinoid (like Retin-A, Differin, or Tazorac, for example), but there are also many great over-the-counter creams that contain lower concentrations of retinol. I like Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream, and SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0.
3. Spending too much on skin care: Splurging on the beautiful packaging and luxurious scents of pricey boutique skin care lines can feel wonderfully pampering -- provided you know that it's absolutely not necessary for great skin. In fact, many of my favorite products are made by drugstore brands, because those companies have the large budgets for top-notch research and development. If you have to choose, put your money toward that prescription retinoid, and buy the rest of your regimen at the drugstore.
4. Getting facials: Yes, that's right -- you can strike facials from your skin-care budget and actually be doing your skin a favor! Studies show that as many as 80% of people break out after a facial. Aestheticians often don't know which products are right for the skin of each client, and may use ingredients that can worsen acne, or essential oils that tend to irritate sensitive skin. Even if you don't break out, there are really no long-term benefits to facials.
5. Washing your face at the wrong time: Always wash your face after you rinse out your hair products and conditioner in the shower, never before. Many conditioners contain pore-clogging isopropyl myristate and other hair products often contain coconut oil -- both are common acne-causing ingredients that you don't want to leave on your skin.
6. Not using sunscreen every day: Not just for your trip to the beach. Not just during the long summer days. Every day. Yes, it's important to be even more vigilant if you plan to spend lots of time in direct sunlight. But incidental sun exposure typically accounts for more of our lifetime exposure to ultraviolet rays than those days at the beach. Walking to and from your car, dashing out of the office for a sandwich, or sitting outside for a few minutes adds up -- make sure you're covered with at least SPF 15, every day.

Miss Mexico Laura Zuniga, Stripped By Organizers

Laura Zuniga, the Mexican beauty queen jailed after she was picked up with an alleged drug cartel leader and heavily armed men, has been stripped of one of her titles, Bolivian organizers said Saturday.
Zuniga lost her title as Queen of Hispanic America, said Promociones Gloria, the Bolivian group that organizes the event.
Vivian Noronha Cia of Brazil now takes the tiara "as consequence of the events known to the public in which Miss Laura Zuniga... was involved," Promociones Gloria said in a brief statement.
Zuniga "failed to follow the rules of the contest, which state that the winner must display correct behavior, stay away from scandals and bad habits, and be a good example to society," Tatiana Limpias de Tarabillo, who heads Promociones Gloria, told the Bolivian daily El Deber.
Zuniga, 23, was picked up late Monday at a military checkpoint in the western Mexican state of Jalisco while traveling with seven armed men in two vehicles carrying 100,000 dollars in cash. Authorities said they found two AR-15 rifles, three pistols, 633 cartridges and 16 mobile phones in the vehicles.
A judge on Friday ordered "the cautionary measure" of 40 days detention for Zuniga and the men "for probably committing crimes" relating to drug trafficking and transporting weapons, the office of Mexico's attorney general said.
Zuniga was picked up along with Angel Orlando Garcia Urquizar, "presumed to be one of the leaders of the Juarez Cartel," the statement read.
Police earlier identified Zuniga as Garcia Urquizar's girlfriend.
The group was "just coming to town. They came from different places and the young woman said that the money was for making purchases in Bolivia and Colombia," said Jalisco public security director Alejandro Solorio at the time of the arrest.
Zuniga is originally from Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, birthplace of one of Mexico's most powerful cartels.
There has been no word on whether Zuniga will keep her title as "Miss Sinaloa," which she won in July.

20 Techniques To Rescue Yourself From The 2009 Economy Crisis

28 December 2008

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

During the worst economic crisis in a lifetime, the right financial decisions are crucial.
BusinessWeek asked financial planners for some advice on what to do -- or not to do -- with your money in the New Year. As we bid farewell to a dreadful 2008, these "resolutions" may help keep your finances on the right track in 2009:
1. Don't try to predict the future.
"We are currently in the midst of unprecedented and complex challenges," says Femi Shote of Asset Harvest Group in McLean, Va. Anyone who thinks he or she can predict what's going to happen is "delusional," Shote says.
Financial advisers often hear from clients who would like to sell stocks now and then buy again when the market hits bottom. "My response is, 'How do you know when that will be?'" says Trent Porter of Priority Financial Planning in Fort Collins, Colo.
2. Do keep enough cash available.
Even if you're not worried about losing your job, a rainy-day fund can provide peace of mind.
There are different guidelines for how much cash to keep on hand. Some say $12,000 or more per adult; others say it should be six to nine months of living expenses. With extra cash available, you can avoid selling investments to pay for expenses in an emergency.
3. Do invest internationally.
Though the financial crisis started in the U.S., the past year has been worse for investments in the rest of the world. The MSCI EAFE, an index of international stocks, is down 43% this year, and stocks in emerging economies fared far worse. American investors who diversified abroad have also been pummeled by the rise in the U.S. dollar.
Even after a year like that, advisers say it's not wise to abandon international investments entirely. For one thing, though some key overseas economies, like China's, have been hit hard lately, their long-term economic fundamentals look better than those of the U.S.
4. Don't try to pick one winning investment. Diversify.
Putting all your money in one stock is dangerous at a time when a company's bankruptcy can completely wipe out the value of its shares.
Robert Siegmann of Financial Management Group in Cincinnati advises clients to balance their portfolios between fixed income and stocks, with shares in various types of companies -- small and large, U.S. and international. "Don't try to pick the winning stock, or the winning idea. Just diversify across all investments and markets," he says.
5. Do think about energy efficiency.
Russell Francis of Portland Financial Advisors in Beaverton, Ore., recommends that investors take advantage of a $500 federal residential energy tax credit that was rescinded in 2008 but returns in 2009. The credit can help cover the costs of adding insulation or replacing doors, windows, or furnaces -- home repairs that should also save you on heating and cooling costs.
6. Don't stop contributing to 401(k) and other retirement accounts.
Says Sidney Blum of GreenLight Fee Only Advisors in Evanston, Ill.: "Everyone loves to invest in their 401(k) when the markets are flying high, but they should keep putting money in while the markets are down." He adds: "More money is made at the bottom of a market than at the top."
Even more pessimistic planners say you should be taking advantage of any match your employer offers for retirement fund contributions.
7. Do live below your means. Save.
Investing for the future is only possible if you have some money left over at the end of each month to sock away. View this BusinessWeek slide show for 25 ways to save more each month.
8. Don't make sudden moves.
"Refrain from making extreme changes to the portfolio just because the financial markets are volatile," says William Howell, a financial adviser in Noblesville, Ind. "Stick to the overall investment game plan."
In such an extreme environment, investment decisions based on emotion or fear are likely to lose you money. It's probably better to ignore the day-to-day news and follow a long-term investing plan.
9. Do pay off expensive debts.
Rather than investing your money, you first might consider paying off debts, especially those with high rates or those for which interest is not tax-deductible. The avoidance of interest will likely save you more than your investments would have earned.
Stanley F. Ehrlich, an adviser in Westfield, N.J., notes: "Paying off a car loan with 7% interest provides an immediate 7% return, a return that is not (currently) available through most asset classes." Credit-card debt is so expensive that most planners say it is always the first thing people should pay off.
10. Don't give up on stocks.
"Historically some of the best periods for stock market returns have been during dismal economic times," says Paul Winter of Five Seasons Financial Planning in Salt Lake City. Though investors approaching retirement shouldn't risk too much money in volatile equity markets, investors hoping to build a nest egg for the long term have few better options than the stock market.
11. Do track your spending.
"It's very easy to lose sight of where your funds are spent," says Alexandra Ollinger of Truepoint Capital in Cincinnati.
G.M. Livingston III, a planner in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., advises clients to buy software like Quicken to track their spending. "It's a universal mistake," Livingston says. "Most people don't know where their money goes."
12. Don't pay high management fees.
It doesn't only matter how much your investments earn; it is also important how much you get to keep after trading costs and fees paid to financial advisers and fund managers. When market returns are small or nonexistent, even a 1% or 2% management fee can hurt. Decide if it's worth it. Also, check out offerings from traditionally low-cost fund companies like Vanguard, where the average mutual fund expense ratio is 0.2%.
13. Do review your credit reports.
With the Federal Reserve cutting the federal funds rate close to zero and policymakers eager to revive the housing market, mortgage rates are expected to drop substantially in 2009. That could be a great opportunity to refinance your mortgage, but only if you have a solid credit score. Check your credit report for any errors now, says Scott Beaudin of Pathway Financial Advisors in Burlington, Vt. "Fixing problems takes time and you don't want to be trying to fix your report while in the middle of a mortgage application," he says. The three U.S. consumer reporting agencies set up a Web site, to allow consumers to access a free copy of their credit report each year.
14. Don't follow the herd.
"Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful," says legendary investor Warren Buffett. Warren Ward, an adviser in Columbus, Ind., agrees, advising his clients to ease back into stock or bond markets rather than seeking the safety of cash or Treasuries as many other investors are doing now. "Do your own thinking and don't allow yourself to be panicked into taking an action you'll regret," Ward says.
15. Do write down an investing plan and budget, and stick to them.
A budget can help control spending and boost the amount of money you save each month. An investing plan takes the emotion out of your investing decision. "Investing systematically (is) especially (important) during market downturns," Ward says.
16. Don't forgo necessary insurance.
You can save some money by increasing your car insurance deductible or forgoing life, disability or home insurance, but you could also be left penniless after a serious emergency. Full coverage isn't always necessary, but make sure you're protected in a worst-case scenario.
17. Do check out your financial adviser.
The arrest of Bernard Madoff, who saw his $50 billion hedge fund collapse in an alleged Ponzi scheme, shows the danger of relying on one person -- whether a fund manager or a financial planner and adviser -- to handle your nest egg.
Don't just pick a broker or planner out of the yellow pages. "Do your homework," says Eileen Freiburger of ESF Financial Planning Group in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Ask advisers about their qualifications, certifications, and educations, as well as their fees, ethics and disclosure policies. Look them up in online databases that track complaints against planners. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's BrokerCheck is a good place to start.
18. Don't invest in anything you don't understand.
This financial crisis has demonstrated the dangers of too much complexity in the investing world. Investors lost big on asset-backed securities and other investments that in many cases they never really understood in the first place. If your adviser or broker can't adequately explain an investment in a few sentences, maybe it's not for you.
19. Do make sure safe investments are actually safe.
J. Mark Joseph of Sentinel Wealth Management in Reston, Va., sticks with supersafe government debt for his clients' fixed-income investments. "Bonds are for safety, so make sure your bonds are safe," he says. "Just because something is a fixed-income investment does not mean it is safe."
In case your bank or broker fails, make sure your bank accounts are covered by insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and your brokerage accounts by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation or supplemental insurance.
20. Don't take more risk than you can handle.
Some investors will react to 2008's losses by trying to be more prudent and conservative in the future. Others, however, will try to win back their losses through bold, risky bets on the next big thing.
That's happened in past downturns, says Elaine Scoggins of Merriman Berkman Next in Seattle. After the tech bubble burst, investors flocked to real estate. A classic mistake is "following one investing mistake by an even bigger one."
The past year has given investors an idea of how bad market conditions can get. In the future, investors may want to evaluate how much risk they're really willing to take and how long they're willing to wait to get outsize returns.

Even A 19 Year Old Can Become Millionaire By Selling Jam, Why Can You?

Scottish teenager Fraser Doherty is well on his way to becoming a millionaire, and it's all thanks to his gran - and her jam.
It all started one rainy afternoon five years ago when his grandmother, Susan, decided to teach the 14 year old how to make jam.
Fraser, from Edinburgh, sold those first jars to neighbours. Then he made some more and sold them to local fetes, then farmers markets.
Fraser said: "I was really excited about it. It soon got to the point where I was making about a thousand jars a week from my parents' tiny kitchen.
They couldn't get in there to cook so I started to use a factory in England. It's been a real adventure, to go so far from such tiny beginnings."
He now supplies 'Super Jam' to over a thousand supermarkets around Britain. Not bad for a 19 year old who still lives at home.
Fraser's original idea was to create the healthiest preserve he could, using grape juice to sweeten it rather than sugar.
And the recipe is going down a treat with customers. It is the number one jam choice in many Scottish stores.
His gran and the rest of his family are very proud of his spreading success.
His dad, Robert said:" It's very exciting. There's been quite a bit of interest around the world. Hopefully he'll keep going and I can retire soon!"
Fraser's modest plans for 2009 involve world domination. He wants to break into the lucrative American market.
If he manages that it would be a jammy break for this young jam entrepreneur.

Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man can't achieve or maintain an erection during sex. The American Academy of Family Physicians says the condition doesn't have to be a natural part of getting older. ED often is attributed to physical or psychological causes. Physical reasons may include:
* Having a side effect of surgery on the prostate or bladder, or radiation therapy to the testicles.
* Having low testosterone levels, kidney failure, liver failure, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.
* Having chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or hardening of the arteries.

* Having had a stroke or an injury to the brain or spinal cord.
* Using too much tobacco or alcohol.

Achieving a toned, sexy tummy might seem like a pipe dream this time of year. Baggy sweaters abound, egg nog is served and Frosty the Snowman doesn't offer much in the way of flat-belly inspiration. But getting a sleek, sexy stomach is easier than you think. Spend just five minutes a day on toning your abs and you'll get an amazing middle.
We rounded up five of the most effective tummy toners around. Work three or four of these exercises into your routine (easing them in will minimize soreness). Do the number of reps indicated, resting one minute between moves. The only equipment you will need is a hand towel. Washboard abs, here you come!
Pike 90
Lie faceup; raise legs until perpendicular to floor, feet flexed. Lower right leg so it hovers 1 or 2 inches off floor and place hands lightly behind head. In this position, do 15 crunches, lifting chest toward ceiling and lowering. Switch legs and repeat.
Crunchy frog
Sit with knees bent, feet flat. Keeping legs together, raise feet several inches and bring knees toward chest. Wrap arms around knees without touching legs. Extend legs and stretch arms to sides, palms forward. Return to wrapped-arm position; repeat. Do 15 reps.
Tornado
Stand with feet hip-width apart, right leg in front of left, right foot turned out. Bend elbows and raise arms out to sides at shoulder level (like goalposts). In one motion, raise right knee to lowered right elbow. Return to start; switch sides and repeat to complete one rep. Do 15 reps.
Corkscrew
Lie faceup. Press legs together and raise them toward ceiling until they're at a 90-degree angle, with knees slightly bent and toes pointed. Raise butt and legs off floor using ab muscles; twist legs slightly to left. Repeat, twisting to right, for one rep. Do 15 reps.
Side arm balance
Start on floor on knees. Lean to left and place left hand on floor under shoulder; extend right arm up and to left, palm down. Straighten right legs out to right with foot on floor, resting on left knee. Hold for 5 breaths. Return to start; switch sides. Repeat twice per side.

Learn How To Make Love Last For A Lifetime

25 December 2008

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

What makes love last a lifetime? Affection? Yep. Respect? Sure. But a great relationship is not just about what you have. It's about what you do to make a relationship stronger, safer, more caring and committed. Every couple needs to take certain steps -- six, to be precise -- that turn the two of you into not just you and me but we. You may not move through all the steps in order, and you may circle back to complete certain steps again (and again and again). But if you make it through them all, you'll be well on your way toward creating a relationship that will be your shelter as long as you both shall live. Here's how to make your "forever" fantastic.
Step #1: Find a shared dream for your life together.
It's easy to get caught up in the small stuff of a life together: What's for dinner tonight? Whose turn is it to clean the litter box? Did you pay the electric bill? But the best partners never lose sight of the fact that they're working together to achieve the same big dreams. "Successful couples quickly develop a mindfulness of 'us,' of being coupled," says Redbook Love Network expert Jane Greer, Ph.D., a marriage and family therapist in New York City. "They have a shared vision, saying things like, 'We want to plan to buy a house, we want to take a vacation to such-and-such a place, we like to do X, we think we want to start a family at Y time.'"
This kind of dream-sharing starts early. "Couples love to tell the story of how they met," points out Julie Holland, M.D., a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine. "It's like telling a fairy tale. But happy couples will go on creating folklore and history, with the meet-cute forming the bedrock of the narrative." As you write and rewrite your love story ("our hardest challenge was X, our dream for retirement is Y"), you continually remind yourselves and each other that you're a team with shared values and goals. And P.S.: When you share a dream, you're a heck of a lot more likely to make that dream come true.
Step #2: Choose each other as your first family.
For years, you were primarily a member of one family: the one in which you grew up. Then you got married, and suddenly you became the foundation of a new family, one in which husband and wife are the A-team. It can be tough to shift your identity like this, but it's also an important part of building your self-image as a duo (and maybe, eventually, as three or four or...).
For me, making this transition meant stopping the incessant complaining to my mom when I was mad at my husband -- my behavior was disloyal, and I had to learn to talk to Jonathan, not about him. My friend Lynn tells the story of her mother's reaction to a trip to the Middle East she and her then-boyfriend (now husband) had planned. Her mother hit the roof, calling incessantly to urge Lynn not to go. Eventually, Lynn's boyfriend got on the phone with Mom and explained why they were excited to share this experience. "It was clear then that we were the team," Lynn says now. "Not teaming up against my mother, but teaming up together to deal with her issues."
Whatever your challenges -- an overprotective mom? an overly critical father-in-law? -- you have to outline together the boundaries between you and all of the families connected to you. Not only will you feel stronger as a united front but when you stick to your shared rules, all that family baggage will weigh on you a lot less.
Step #3: Learn how to fight right.
I'm embarrassed to think of how I coped with conflict early in my relationship with Jonathan. I stormed out -- a lot. I once threw an apple at his head. Hard. (Don't worry, I missed -- on purpose.) I had a terrible habit of threatening divorce at the slightest provocation. But eventually I figured that this was pretty moronic. I didn't want out, and I knew that pelting someone with fruit was not a long-term marital strategy.
"Fighting is the big problem every couple has to deal with," says Daniel B. Wile, Ph.D., a psychologist and couples therapist in Oakland, CA, and author of "After the Fight". That's because fights will always come up, so every couple needs to learn how to fight without tearing each other apart.
Fighting right doesn't just mean not throwing produce; it means staying focused on the issue at hand and respecting each other's perspective. Couples that fight right also find ways to defuse the tension, says Wile -- often with humor. "Whenever one of us wants the other to listen up, we mime hitting the TV remote, a thumb pressing down on an invisible mute button," says Nancy, 52, an event producer in San Francisco. "It cracks us up, in part because it must look insane to others." Even if you fight a lot, when you can find a way to turn fights toward the positive -- with a smile, a quick apology, an expression of appreciation for the other person -- the storm blows away fast, and that's what matters.
Step #4: Find a balance between time for two and time for you.
Jonathan and I both work at home. This frequently leads to murderous impulses. Though I'm typing away in the bedroom and he's talking to his consulting clients in our small home office, most days it really feels like too much intimacy for me.
But that's my bias. When it comes to togetherness, every couple has its own unique sweet spot. "There are couples that are never apart and there are couples that see each other only on weekends," Greer says. With the right balance, neither partner feels slighted or smothered. You have enough non-shared experiences to fire you up and help you maintain a sense of yourself outside the relationship -- not to mention give you something to talk about at the dinner table. But you also have enough time together to feel your connection as a strong tie rather than as a loose thread.
Your togetherness needs will also change over time, so you'll have to shift your balance accordingly. "My husband and I spend a lot of time together, but it's almost all family time," says Katie, 40, a mom of two in San Leandro, CA. "We realized a few months ago that we hadn't had a conversation that didn't involve the kids or our to-do lists in ages, so we committed to a weekly date. We were so happy just to go to the movies and hold hands, something we hadn't done in ages. It felt like we were dating again!"
Step #5: Build a best friendship.
Think about the things that make your closest friendships irreplaceable: the trust that comes with true intimacy, the willingness to be vulnerable, the confidence that the friendship can withstand some conflict. Don't those sound like good things to have in your relationship with your signficant other, too?
"Happy couples are each other's haven," says Holland. "They can count on the other person to listen and try to meet their needs." Greer adds, "When you're true friends, you acknowledge and respect what the other person is; you don't try to control or change them. This creates a sense of safety and security when you're together -- you know you're valued for who you are and you see the value in your partner."
Then there's the way, when you've been with someone a while, that you become almost a mind reader. You have a shared history and inside jokes. Your guy knows what you'll find funny, you forward him links to articles you know he'll enjoy, and best of all, you two can make eye contact at a given moment and say volumes without opening your mouths. And is there anything more pleasurable than sharing the newspaper with someone? Sitting in companionable silence, absorbed in your respective reading, sipping coffee, occasionally reading something out loud, but mostly just lazing happily together, communing without needing to speak? Ahh....
Step #6: Face down a major challenge together.
You're sailing along through life, and suddenly you hit a huge bump. A serious illness. Unemployment. The loss of a home. A death in the family. How do you cope?
The truth is, you never know how strong your relationship is until it's tested. All too often, the stress of a crisis can pull a couple apart. But the good news is, when you do make it through in one piece, you might just find yourselves tighter than ever.
"What didn't happen to us?" says Daryl, 28, a preschool teacher in Harrisburg, PA. "My husband lost his job and took a minimum-wage job he was way overqualified for just to make ends meet. He was offered a better job in a mountain town outside San Diego, so we moved. Then during the California wildfires several years ago, our house burned down and we lost everything. We were living in a one-room converted garage with no running water and a newborn. But we found that this chaos somehow brought us even closer together. We took turns losing it. We really kept each other sane."
Hey, being a couple is no roll in the hay. It's tough, real work. But the reward, the edifice you build together that will shelter you through years of tough times, is more than worth the effort. The small, friendly cottage you build -- decorated with your shared history and stories, filled with color and laughter -- will be the warmest and safest retreat you can imagine.

Vivian Chow Already Married, But It's 10 Years Ago

The dramatic twist in Joe Nieh and Vivian Chow's relationship is unbelievable. While their marriage preparations are in progress, there is a new development to their love story. According to the latest edition of Hong Kong's East Magazine, Chow and Nieh has registered their marriage ten years ago in the States. This is also speculated to be the reason why Chow has tolerated and forgave Nieh's frivolous behavior, in salvaging the marriage.
East Magazine also reports that when Chow gave up her career at its peak in 1997 for migration to the States, she was only holding a social visit visa and has to constantly renew it every three months. To save the trouble, Chow and Nieh registered their marriage under the witness of Nieh's parents and some close relatives. They had been staying in San Francisco until 1999 when they moved to Canada after Chow received her green card.
Last Thursday, Dec 18, Nieh announced unilaterally that he will be marrying Chow. According to a lawyer, their marriage registration in the States is legally effective in Hong Kong and there is no need to re-register their marriage. However, even if they were to re-register, it will not be considered bigamy as long as their spouse is the same person. Even if they were to file for divorce, it is also not necessary to do it in both countries. However assets allocation will be done according to the legislation of the country where the divorce is filed; in Hong Kong, both parties will take half of their total assets.
The media and public have also been speculating the venue of their wedding. Most believe that the highly luxurious and tranquil Hong Kong Parkview may be the place for the wedding banquet as Nieh is a member of the clubhouse. In addition, there are also reports that the couple is eyeing the Hong Kong Jockey Club at Happy Valley for its tight security and reasonable pricing. The place is also near Chow's residence and is also the best place to shake off the paparazzi.
With regards to the wedding date, Jan 5, which was previously announced, the public is expecting it to change anytime. Chow's manager Ambrose Chan tells reporters, "It should not be that soon. The marriage registration will only be approved in 15 days; it is not possible for the wedding banquet to happen immediately after the approval." The couple's bosom pal Leo Ku also says he has not received any notifications on Chow's wedding yet.

A celebrity pig that survived for 36 days buried beneath rubble in quake-hit southwest China has been named the nation's animal of the year, state press reported.
The pig won the award in an online vote after his ordeal earned him celebrity status and a plush life as the top attraction at an earthquake museum, the China Daily said in a weekend report.
The pig, known as "Zhu Jianqiang" which means "Strong Pig", shot to fame after he was discovered alive beneath rubble, 36 days after the magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck Sichuan province on May 12.
The pig survived on rainwater and a bag of charcoal during his ordeal and was sold to the Jianchuan Museum, which agreed to nurture him for the rest of his life as a reminder of the nation's resilience in disaster.
Now free from the worry of the slaughterhouse, the pig enjoys a cushy life at the museum, the report said.
"It's gotten fatter and lazier by the day," the paper quoted a museum staff member as saying.
"We used to take it out for a walk every morning and afternoon, but now it's too lazy -- and too fat -- to do it. So we're feeding it only twice a day."
According to the Red Net forum, the website that held the online vote, the two-year old pig "vividly illustrated the spirit of never giving up" and has become a model for Chinese entrepreneurs" amid the current economic downturn.

Alex Tew Became Overnite Success Thanks To Bush Shoe Game

22 December 2008

A hastily-made online game for throwing shoes at President Bush has become a surprise hit - and made thousands for its creator when he sold it on eBay. Alex Tew thought up Sock And Awe a week ago and within days 45 million shoes had been thrown by 4.5 million unique users.
The 24-year-old from London has now sold the game he made late at night over pizza and beer on the online auction site.
Web company Fubra had the winning bid of £5,215 - not bad for less than four days work.
We built SockandAwe.com just for fun (and partly as a promo for our start-up, PopJam) but had no idea it would become quite so popular.
"So, now we are selling it because a) we don't really know what to do with it, b) we can recover some of the hosting costs (plus pizza and beer costs!), and c) the money will be useful for our little four-man start-up," he wrote on the auction page.
A league table on the page reveals users in the United States have thrown the most shoes, followed by people in France, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
The game has been mentioned on US television shows and inspired fans to post YouTube videos of themselves playing.
"It went explosively viral around the world and we didn't really expect it to do that," he explained.
He decided to sell when maintaining the game began taking time and energy away from his real day job of preparing to launch a humour website.
Mr Tew first discovered he could make money from the internet when he created the Million Dollar Homepage to fund his degree in 2005.
The site was so successful, he became a dollar millionaire and dropped out of university.

Sneezing Can Reveal Your Sexual Appetite

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

Sneezing may give a lot more away than the fact that you have a cold - it could mean you are having lurid thoughts about sex.
Researchers have found evidence that in certain people sneezing can be triggered by sexual fantasy.
Dr Mahmood Bhutta, an ear, nose and throat specialist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, launched the study after seeing a patient who suffered "uncontrollable" sneezing fits every time he had a sexual thought.
"We thought this unusual and performed a literature search of the topic," he wrote in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Together with colleague Dr Harold Maxwell, a retired consultant psychiatrist, Dr Bhutta scoured internet chatrooms looking for examples of conversations about sneezing and sex.
Typing the words "sex, sneeze OR sneezing" into Google produced a surprising number of hits. Seventeen people of both sexes reported sneezing immediately they thought about sex, and three had the same experience after orgasm.
"Although internet reports do not give us an accurate incidence of these phenomena, our findings do suggest that it is much more common than recognised," wrote Dr Bhutta and Dr Maxwell.
Sneezing usually occurs in response to nasal irritation, triggering a reflex that expels air at speeds of around 150 kilometres an hour.
Eyebrow plucking can also provoke sneezing by stimulating the trigeminal nerve, which produces sensations in the face.
But other more puzzling sneezing triggers are also known, said the researchers.
Both men and women are susceptible to the problem, which may be inherited and it is thought to be closely linked to the way sunlight can make some people sneeze.
The news could lead to raised eyebrows on the bus or train next time a passenger snorts into a tissue.

UEFA Champion's League Winner Will Take Home A Staggering £98.69m

18 December 2008

The winner of this year's Champions League football tournament will pocket £98.69m, the competition's sponsors said.
Teams reaching the knockout stages will take home between £34.39m and £41.27m, new figures show.
Details of the huge windfalls came as the draw was being made for the final 16 of the 2008/9 competition.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are in the running for the Rome final in May.
The study on behalf of MasterCard was conducted by one of the world's leading sport business experts, Professor Simon Chadwick.
He said: "In uncertain economic times, sport's universal appeal remains strong, making it one of the most lucrative industries to be involved in.
"The competition continues to be an important source of revenue and commercial activity for clubs, especially for those that qualify for the knockout phase of the competition."
The winnings are broken down into a UEFA participation payment, prize money, a share of UEFA commercial revenues, ticket sales, sponsorship and sales of merchandise and increased squad value.
UEFA awards £2.68million to each team that qualifies for the tournament plus £2.15million for participating in the Group stage.
A Group stage win is worth over £530,000 per game, or £268,000 for a draw.
Reaching the first knockout phase nets an instant £1.9million prize payment.
A side qualifying for the knockout phase will have secured on average £8.4million in UEFA prize money alone.
UEFA will make additional payments to Group stage teams which the MasterCard report suggests could amount to approximately £8.4million per club.
The study also suggests ticket revenues have generated an average of £7.64million in income from the Group stage.
Commercial and marketing revenues account for a further £5.36million on average. Meanwhile, squad values increase by an average of £4.47million on the back of qualification for the knockout phase.
UEFA prize money adds £2.2 million for each quarter-finalist, £2.68 million for each semi-finalist, £3.57 million for the runners-up and £6.26 million for the winners.
According to the study, the side that lifts the UEFA Champions League trophy could earn up to a total of £19.5million in prize money, £8.4million market pool payment, £17.84million in ticket revenues, £12.5million in commercial and marketing revenues, £13.4 million in increased squad value, and up to £26.8million in other premiums including bonus payments linked to sponsorship.

Nude Pictures Of French First Lady Increase Bag Sales

French first lady and former supermodel Carla Bruni has won £38,000 in damages from a company that sold bags emblazoned with a nude photo of her.
The 40-year-old beauty claimed use of the naked picture by French clothes company Pardon constituted the theft of her image.
The white canvas bags on sale on the French island of Reunion showed a black and white image of President Nicolas Sarkozy's Italian-born wife, with the slogan 'My man should have taken me shopping at Pardon'.
The nude photograph was a 1993 shot by Michel Comte showing the young Ms Bruni standing in a pigeon-toed pose with her hands strategically placed.
The company had also planned to begin selling the bags on mainland France in the run-up to Christmas.
But a court in Reunion has ordered the company to destroy its stock of bags and pay damages and compensation to the first lady.
Pardon said it had made 10,000 of the bags, which cost £2.50, and sold around half of them. The remaining stock is to be burned.
"We are pleased with the decision of the court in acknowledging the moral and financial damage to Ms Bruni," her lawyer Thierry Herzog said, adding the damages would be donated to charity. He had argued that the photo in question was taken for an anti-Aids campaign and that the first lady "did not want this goal to be hijacked" for commercial purposes.
The legal action came only weeks after Mr Sarkozy failed to have voodoo doll lookalikes of himself, sold with a pack of 12 pins, withdrawn from shops.

Miss Asia Pageant Rock By Scandal

Hong Kong Asia Television's (ATV) executive chairman Linus Cheung refuted on Monday, the results of Miss Asia Pageant which was announced last week. Reports have shown that the pageant results and public voting results do not tally. ATV has set up an independent investigation team to look into the greatest scandal in the history of the pageant. Chief executive Ricky Wong also resigned on the same day after 12 days into his new appointment.
Miss Asia Pageant has 20 years history and is one of Asia's most reputable pageants. This year, to increase the entertainment and excitement value, the pageant's top three winners and "Perfect Figure Award" are given based on public voting through the Internet and mobile phone, instead of being based on professional judgment. Hot favorite Eunice Yao commanded popular support and successfully won the crown. Belinda Yen was first runner up and also "Miss Photogenic"; second runner up was Lene Lai from Taiwan. But now, none of them is able to retain their crowns.
A week after the pageant ended, Cheung called for an urgent press conference with the support of his Vice President to refute the results. They said the results have violated the principles of trust, fairness and justice. An independent task force will look into the matter and the result is estimated to be out in two months time.
Cheung reveals in an internal meeting held on Dec 10 that Wong found inconsistency in the statistical report of the public voting results and the crowning results. Wong informed Cheung of the discrepancy immediately.
At the press conference, Cheung took a bow to express his apologies to the contestants and the legislative council Timothy Fok.

Korean Actress Escape Jail After Adultery Sentence

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

A popular actress in South Korea has avoided going to jail for adultery after being handed a suspended prison sentence. Ok So-ri, who admitted having an affair with a singer, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
Speaking outside the court, she said she was not sure if she would appeal against the ruling.
"I would like to say I'm sorry for stirring up such a controversy," she said.
The court near Seoul gave her lover a six-month suspended sentence.
Ok, 40, had been trying to overturn the law which criminalises extra-marital relationships.
Her lawyers argued: "The adultery law ... has degenerated into a means of revenge by the spouse, rather than a means of saving a marriage."
But South Korea's constitutional court ruled against her case in October, saying society would be harmed if it overturned the law.
Although it is rare for adulterers to be sent to jail, prosecutors had called for Ok to get an 18-month sentence.
South Korea introduced its adultery law more than 50 years ago to protect women, who then had few rights in a male-dominated society.
But critics say it is now a draconian measure no longer fit for a country with an advanced civil and family court system.

Nicole Kidman May Not Have Anymore Children Due To "Didgeridoo" Curse

Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has been warned she may not have any more children - because she tried to play the didgeridoo.
The Oscar winner blew into the traditional instrument while promoting her latest film Australia on a German television show.
Co-star Hugh Jackman laughed and danced on one leg while she played during their appearance on Wetten, Dass...?
But Kidman's performance upset members of the Aboriginal community, who say she should know that the didgeridoo is taboo for women.
"People are going to see Nicole playing it and think it's all right," actor, screenwriter and Aboriginal language teacher Richard Green told the Sydney Morning Herald.
"It bastardises our culture. I will guarantee she has no more children.
"It is not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren."
The actress gave birth to her first child Sunday Rose in July at the age of 41, after marrying country singer Keith Urban in 2006.
At the premiere of Australia in Sydney last month, she suggested she would like to put her film career on hold to expand their family.
"I'm in a place in my life where I've... had some great opportunities. And I may just choose to have some more children," she said.
The star suffered an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage during her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.

Cheap Rolex Can Be Found Everywhere In Singapore

ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b ss_blog_claim=a7fb887f051384cb66dc6c8ff60c753b

Suffering from recession blues and looking to offload that new Rolex watch?
Don't turn to us, say second-hand luxury stores in Singapore, who are being swamped with requests from people desperate to sell their luxury goods.
Traditionally resilient during times of economic downturn, more than 70 second hand shops in the city-state are feeling the chill of recession, as the appetite for expensive goods has fallen sharply despite big discounts.
"Rolex prices have been like a reliable currency in the past, but there are signs that even Rolex is hit by this recession wave," said Ngo Han, an avid watch collector.
"New Rolexes are selling at much lower prices than before and that has trickled down to the second-hand market," Ngo said.
Home to the highest density of millionaires in the world, Singapore is a wealth management centre and a shopping destination for the region's wealthy.
UNAFFORDABLE LUXURIES
Second-hand stores that stock luxury goods, such as brand name bags and flatscreen televisions, experienced a boom in the past few years, as rising incomes and the need to upgrade to keep up with fast-changing fashions created a fertile secondary market for designer wares.
But with the city-state becoming the first Asian country to slip into recession this year, customers are changing their habits.
Where once they would have bought Rolexes or Patek Philippes that can cost over S$10,000, , they now opt for models that cost under S$5,000, , shop owners said.
"Business has gone down about 20 to 30 percent. The interest to buy watches is still there, but whether people can afford to buy is another thing," said Alvin Lye of Monster-Time.
His online store, http://www.monster-time.com, carries second hand watches from Breitling, Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Longines.
During lunch hour in Singapore's financial district, people fill up May Fong's second-hand luxury bag store, but few are buying, even with many of the bags going at a 50 percent discount.
"There is definitely a drop in business. People are more conscious spending, even if it's a bargain," Fong said.
TEMPORARY SETBACKS?
Shops that rent, rather than sell, designer goods, are however reporting a spike in rentals despite the recession, suggesting some locals are still keen to get glamorous goods, albeit temporarily.
"New bags are leased out within seconds posted on the website," ex-policeman Tan Ho Ching, who rents out designer bags for about S$125 a week via his online store http://www.thatbagiwant.com, told local press on Sunday.
The recession's impact on workers whose salaries are commission-based, such as property agents, could be a likely explanation for the drop-off in sales.
"These people tend to earn much more during the boom times, and they are also likely to make up a significant portion of the consumers for these luxury goods," said Alvin Liew, an economist with Standard Chartered in Singapore.
However, some watch enthusiasts said they were holding onto their horological investments, keen to turn a profit once the recession lifts.
A recent Reuters poll said Singapore would be the worst performing emerging Asian economy next year, but would see a recovery together with the rest of the region in 2010 [ID:nHKG10473].
"Watches are better to keep and are better than cash in a recession. They won't drop in value, and after a recession, the value is still there or more," said collector Yeo on online watch forum http://www.swx.com.sg.

Nearly one out of two women would rather give up sex for two weeks than go without the Internet, according to a survey released Monday.
Far fewer men would choose to go without sex, according to the survey of 2,119 adults carried out by the online research firm Harris Interactive and sponsored by Intel Corp., the world's biggest computer chip maker.
Forty-six percent of the women polled said they would rather go without sex for two weeks than give up access to the Internet for the same period of time, according to the survey, "Internet Reliance in Today's Economy."
Only 30 percent of men said they would rather forgo intimate relations than cyber ones.
Ninety-five percent of those surveyed said it is "very important, important or somewhat important" to be able to access the Internet.
Sixty-five percent of those surveyed rated Internet access above other discretionary spending items such as cable television subscriptions (39 percent), dining out (20 percent), shopping for clothes (18 percent) or a health club membership (10 percent).
Sixty-one percent of the women surveyed said they would rather give up watching television for two weeks than give up access to the Internet for one week.
Harris Interactive and Intel said the survey was conducted November 18-20. They did not provide a margin of error for the results.

Iraqi Journalist Throw Shoes At George Bush Caught In Live Video

14 December 2008

On an Iraq trip shrouded in secrecy and marred by dissent, President George W. Bush on Sunday hailed progress in the war that defines his presidency and got a size-10 reminder of his unpopularity when a man hurled two shoes at him during a news conference.
"This is a farewell kiss, you dog!" shouted the protester in Arabic, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.
Bush ducked both shoes as they whizzed past his head and landed with a thud against the wall behind him.
"It was a size 10," Bush joked later.
The U.S. president visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to his successor, Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence in a nation still riven by ethnic strife and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011.
"The war is not over," Bush said, adding that "it is decisively on it's way to being won."
In many ways, the unannounced trip was a victory lap without a clear victory. Nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq fighting a war that is intensely disliked across the globe. More than 4,209 members of the U.S. military have died in the conflict, which has cost U.S. taxpayers $576 billion since it began five years and nine months ago.
Polls show most Americans believe the U.S. erred in invading Iraq in 2003. Bush ordered the nation into war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq while citing intelligence claiming the Mideast nation harbored weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were never found, the intelligence was discredited, Bush's credibility with U.S. voters plummeted and Saddam was captured and executed.
"There is still more work to be done," Bush said after his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
It was at that point the journalist stood up and threw a shoe from about 20 feet away. Bush ducked, and it narrowly missed his head. The second shoe came quickly, and Bush ducked again while several Iraqis grabbed the man and dragged him to the floor.
In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. Iraqis whacked a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. marines toppled it to the ground following the 2003 invasion.
White House press secretary Dana Perino suffered an eye injury in the news conference melee; NBC News reported she was hit in the face with a microphone. Bush brushed off the incident, comparing it to political protests at home.
"So what if a guy threw his shoe at me?" he said.
Al-Maliki, who spoke before the incident, praised postwar progress: "Today, Iraq is moving forward in every field."
After the news conference, the president took a 15-minute helicopter ride through dark skies over Baghdad to Camp Victory. Telling hundreds of troops he was "heading into retirement," Bush blamed Saddam for the 2003 invasion and said, "America is safer and more secure" than it was before the war.
For Bush, the war is the issue around which both he and the country defined his two terms in office. He saw the invasion and continuing fight as a necessary action to protect Americans and fight terrorism. Though his decision won support at first, the public now has largely decided that the U.S. needs to get out of Iraq.
Air Force One, the president's distinctive powder blue-and-white jetliner, landed at Baghdad International Airport in the afternoon local time after a secretive Saturday night departure from Washington. In a sign of security gains in this war zone, Bush received a formal arrival ceremony — a flourish absent in his three earlier trips.
Bush soon began a rapid-fire series of meetings with top Iraqi leaders.
He met first with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and the country's two vice presidents, Tariq al-Hashemi and Adel Abdul-Mahdi, at the ornate, marble-floored Salam Palace along the shores of the Tigris River.
Later, Bush's motorcade pulled out the heavily fortified Green Zone and crossed over the Tigris so he could meet al-Maliki at the prime minister's palace. A huge orange moon hung low over the horizon as Bush's was ferried quickly through the city.
The two leaders signed ceremonial copy of the security agreement.
The Bush administration and even White House critics credit last year's military buildup with the security gains in Iraq. Last month, attacks fell to the lowest monthly level since the war began in 2003.
Still, it's unclear what will happen when the U.S. troops leave. While violence has slowed in Iraq, attacks continue, especially in the north. At least 55 people were killed Thursday in a suicide bombing in a restaurant near Kirkuk.
It was Bush's last trip to the war zone before Obama takes office Jan. 20. Obama won an election largely viewed as a referendum on Bush, who has endured low approval ratings because of the war and more recently, the U.S. recession.
Obama, a Democrat, has promised he will bring all U.S. combat troops back home from Iraq a little over a year into his term, as long as commanders agree a withdrawal would not endanger American personnel or Iraq's security. Obama has said the drawdown in Iraq would allow him to shift troops and bolster the U.S. presence in Afghanistan.
The new U.S.-Iraqi security pact, calls for all American troops to be withdrawn by the end of 2011, in two stages. The first stage begins next year, when U.S. troops pull back from Baghdad and other Iraqi cities by the end of June. Gen. Raymond Odierno, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said Saturday that even after that summer deadline, some U.S. troops will remain in Iraqi cities.
Journalists and staff who made the 10 1/2-hour trip to Iraq with the president agreed to tell almost no one about the plans, and the White House released false schedules detailing activities planned for Bush in Washington on Sunday.

One In Every Five Teenagers Are Having Tech Sex

10 December 2008

One in five US teens has sent nude or partially clothed images of themselves to someone by email or mobile phone and twice as many have sent sexually suggestive electronic messages, a poll showed Wednesday.
And American youngsters aged 13-19 are having tech-sex despite a majority of them saying it could have "serious negative consequences" on them, the survey commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy (NCTUP) showed.
More than half of the 1,280 teens and young adults up to age 26 who took part in the online poll, conducted in September and October, said they had received a sexually suggestive message from someone else -- and one in five said they had shared the racy message with a third person.
Eight in 10 teens said they would be concerned about sending a sexy image of themselves or racy message because they "might regret it later," while nearly 70 percent said they were worried it could "disappoint family."
Where teen tech-sex gives real rise to concern among adults, said NCTUP, is that more than one-third of teens (38 percent) say exchanging sexy content makes dating or physical sex with others more likely, and three in 10 say those who exchange sexually suggestive content are "expected to hook up."
"That so many young people say technology is encouraging an even more casual, hook-up culture is reason for concern, given the high rates of teen and unplanned pregnancy in the United States," said Marisa Nightingale, senior advisor to NCTUP.
Although teen pregnancy and birth rates in the United States have dropped by one-third since the 1990s, they remain high compared to other developed countries and carry high costs to the teens involved, their children and society, NCPTUP said in a report published last year.
"The US birth rate of 41 per 1,000 in 2004 was much higher than Canada's 14 (in 2003), England and Wales' 27 (the highest rate in Western Europe), Japan's six and the Netherlands' five (the lowest rate in Western Europe)," said NCTUP's "Emerging Answers" report, published in November 2007.
More than 30 percent of girls in the United States become pregnant before they reach age 20, and many become pregnant a second time before their 20th birthday, according to NCTUP.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of all 15- to 19-year-olds in the United States have had sex at least once.

9 Must Have Qualities If You Want To Attract Girls

09 December 2008

My friends and I have spent many a long night brainstorming that magic formula of characteristics that drives the ladies wild. It is impossible to know just what the mixture is supposed to be, but is there one characteristic that can work alone to make a guy really attractive?
Here are the nine characteristics we've come up with:
Sense of Humor
Everyone says how important sense of humor is, and I have learned to look for it in women. I am lucky enough to be able to make women laugh, but I'm still super single.
Trustworthy

Trust is the holy grail of a relationship. It takes years to build it, and it is so delicate. There are few things that take so long to attain that can be destroyed so quickly. So a lot of us may finally settle on a very trustworthy person when we finally find that.
Kindness
This seems like a no-brainer, but I've seen plenty of girls stay with guys who don't treat them well. So, I'm thinking that most women look for a nice guy, but the fact of the matter is that mean guys seem to get girlfriends too-and at a better rate than nice guys. Money
I admit it: I sometimes envision myself marrying rich and sitting there doing nothing. I could lie out on my wife's yacht and host lavish parties and hear about how crazy the Roaring 20's were, when my wife's friends were my age. Money is definitely high on a lot of people's list: remember when Anna Nicole Smith married that really old rich guy? I doubt it was because she thought he was hot, funny, or great in the sack.
Super Hot
As much as we hate to admit it, the first thing we notice about someone else is how good or bad they look. But one of the first lessons we learn in the dating world is as beautiful as someone is on the outside, they could be ugly on the inside.
Confident
Confidence is based on a lot of these characteristics. You are confident if you are talented, super hot, intelligent, or wealthy most likely. But confidence also enables you to treat people better, so you are kind and trustworthy as well. Because confidence includes so many of these other characteristic, it may just be the one major thing women look for in a man.
Talented & Passionate
When someone possesses a special skill, such as visual art or guitar virtuosity, they get tons of girls. People like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Brady can go out with anyone they want because they are skilled. Heck, I'd go out with them. Usually skill occurs in tandem with passion, another attractive quality. When someone is really good at something, but not "hot," it makes sense that they can still attract a lot of women. It's less annoying to see someone like this in a relationship than it is to see a rich mean guy in a relationship.
Intelligent
I am intimidated by women who are more intelligent than I am (which explains why I'm intimidated by about 97% of the female population). For a lot of people, intelligence is sexy. When someone is stupid, it's frustrating and boring, which is enough to drive someone away.
Convenient
One can argue that convenience is a huge driver for a relationship. Does he live near you, is he "ready" to be in a relationship, does he want to have kids or not? Everything matches up correctly. Sure, he may not be the best-looking guy or have a lot of money, but it's just what you need and it's been a long, difficult search.
If we put these characteristics on a pie chart, what would get the biggest piece of the pie with you? Again, some of these characteristics occur together: intelligence and wealth, talent and passion, kindness and generosity, convenience and wealth.
How often do women care about superficial things like money? It's scary, but sometimes I fear that no matter how funny I am, if I had lots of money I could date any cute girl I wanted.
How do all of these characteristics shake out for you when choosing a boyfriend, and are there any you'd add to the list? Does confidence just take all of these characteristics into consideration?

Sexual Service Cut 1/2 Price In Bangkok

08 December 2008

The go-go bars are empty and sex is on sale at half price as Bangkok's infamous red light districts suffer from a blockade of the capital's airports.
"It's high season, but now it's like low season," said Nan, a scantily-clad hostess at one deserted nightspot in the Thai capital's notorious Patpong area.
An old man played guitar and sang along to a karaoke machine inside. Outside, beneath the pink neon, about 10 women in almost identical low-cut dresses tried to drum up trade.
Although anti-government protesters have ended an eight-day siege of Bangkok's airports, the effect of Thailand's ongoing political chaos on the tourism industry is devastating.
Sex tourism is no exception. Patpong depends on foreigners to keep afloat, but as the 350,000 air travellers stranded by the airport closures rush to leave Thailand, replacements are not coming in.
"Now Thailand has a problem -- no customers," said Lam, a man who works for Nan's bar, luring tourists in off the streets by posing as a friendly Thai offering unsolicited advice on good places to go.
Lam is hopeful the trade will return to Patpong, a lurid strip of live shows and sleazy nightlife.
"It is because of the airport, but now the airport is all clear," he said.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is not so optimistic.
The group expects incoming travellers in 2009 to be half the 14.8 million the kingdom saw last year, with word of the protests causing tourists considering a trip to Thailand to book elsewhere.
At the normally standing-room-only "ping-pong" shows, five or six women swarm each new arrival. Some are following the example of Thailand's resorts and luxury hotels by offering discounted rates.
Prostitutes offer two hours of sexual services for 800 baht (about 22 dollars) instead of the normal 1,500 to 2,000 baht that would cost.
The airport closures also hurt Bangkok's other entertainment options, such as the famous "ladyboy" cabaret shows.
"The shutdown of the airports seriously affected our business," said Nipon Boonmasuwaran, sales and marketing manager of the Calypso show in Bangkok, where flamboyantly-dressed transvestites lip-sync and dance to famous tunes.
"Our guests have dropped 90 percent -- we have less than 50 guests in our 350-seat theatre," Nipon said.
The Calypso also cancelled its second daily showing during the November 25-December 3 chaos, when images of frustrated tourists trying to flee Thailand from a military airbase beamed around the world.
"We handed out thousands of free tickets for the stranded hotel guests in order to entertain them and hope that they would buy drinks -- otherwise we will have no business," he said.
"Since re-opening of the airports business is trickling in but very slow," adding that guests normally came from Europe -- especially the Netherlands and Belgium -- and Asian countries such as South Korea, Japan and Singapore.
The blockade may have brought in some extra trade.
American tourists Lisa Richardson, 30, and Michael Latham, 29, said they would never have come to Patpong had they not been stranded in Bangkok.
"Being stuck for an extra week convinced us to spend time and money on things we wouldn't have normally -- ping-pong shows for example," said Latham.
But he said that he felt for Thais whose livelihood was being hit, adding: "they're hurt so much worse than we are and it just hurts to see," Latham said.
Thailand was until 2005 the world's leading destination for sex tourists, when its crown was taken by Brazil, according to Interpol.
Although prostitution is officially illegal in Thailand, estimates for the number of sex workers range from 80 000 to two million women and men.
At her Patpong bar, Nan says she hopes the tourists return soon, as she sends the money she earns back to her family near the Cambodian border.
"Maybe in 15 days, a month it comes back," she said.
