Sir Alex Ferguson admits Manchester United tried to sign Dimitar Berbatov two years ago.
Berbatov completed an expected move to Old Trafford from Tottenham Hotspur just before the close of the transfer window on Monday.
The Bulgarian has signed a four-year contract with the champions and admits his switch to United is 'a dream come true'.
However, he could have become a United player in 2006 after Ferguson confirmed he rivalled Spurs for his signature from Bayer Leverkusen.
Spurs stumped up almost £11million to snare Berbatov from Bayer, with Ferguson admitting the Red Devils moved too late for the 27-year-old.
Ferguson is now delighted to have landed the striker and is confident he will justify the £30.75million United have paid to Tottenham.
"We tried to get him when he was at Bayer Leverkusen, but we only had a few days to get the deal done," Ferguson told MUTV.
"Tottenham had already made a bid. Unfortunately, we hadn't moved at the right time two years ago.
"Now we've managed to get him. It's cost us a bit more money, but he's worth it."
